Green Key Global is a leading, international, GSTC-recognized, environmental certification body whose suite of industry-standard programs and resources has been designed specifically for the lodging and meetings industries. Rodd Royalty is proud to be a member of Green Key Global and has received three Green Keys for their sustainability efforts. Rodd Charlottetown is also a proud member of Green Key Global and has received three Green Keys for their sustainability efforts.
Rodd Properties have established a number of environmental initiatives:
- Towel/Sheet Conservation Program: Rodd Properties encourages our guests to help conserve water, energy, and chemicals by reusing their towels and linens during their stay.
- Energy Innovators Initiative: Rodd Hotels and Resorts have joined the Natural Resources of Canada program, which promotes energy cost reduction and greenhouse gas reduction. Through this program, energy audits are conducted across all properties to identify potential energy savings.
- HAC ECOmmodation Rating Program: The Rodd Charlottetown Hotel and Rodd Miramichi River Resort have both achieved a 4 green key rating in this environmental stewardship program. This rating recognizes the national industry leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through comprehensive policies and practices.
- GMIST: Rodd managers have attended workshops on “Greening Your Business” at the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism (GMIST). GMIST aims to enhance the quality and sustainability of outdoor/nature-based experiences in Atlantic Canada by offering training programs focused on sustainable tourism practices, experiential tourism services, and eco-adventure tourism.
- Waste Management: In Prince Edward Island, all Rodd Hotels and Resorts participate in the Waste Watch program. Waste Watch is a source separation-based waste management system with the goal of achieving a 65% diversion from waste, making Prince Edward Island a national leader in waste reduction. All properties throughout Atlantic Canada have recycling bins in every room and recycle glass, aluminum, plastic, newspaper, and cardboard.
- Energy Conservation: Rodd Hotels and Resorts are actively replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lighting to improve energy efficiency. Upgrades to water-efficient showerheads, taps, and low-flow toilets is currently in the process as older models are phased out. Employees are encouraged to close curtains, turn off lights and air conditioning units when rooms are unoccupied, and maintain thermostats at a consistent comfortable temperature.
- Sustainable Purchasing: Rodd Hotels & Resorts prioritizes the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products and have reduced the use of aerosol cans by switching to refillable pump spray bottles. Preferences have been made to products made from recycled materials and those that can be reused.
- Internet Technology: The Rodd Hotels & Resort website employs paperless technology to minimize its environmental impact. It serves as a platform to provide information about the Hotels and Resorts and enables online reservations, reducing the need for paper-based processes.

In early 2025 the hotel completed the installation of solar panels in partnership with Sunly Energy, projected to generate approximately 44,475 kWh per year, covering 48% of the hotel’s annual electrical needs from its main meter.
In addition to the solar project, the hotel’s other sustainability initiatives include:
- District Heating: The hotel is connected to PEI Energy Systems’ district energy plant, which uses municipal solid waste and biomass to provide thermal energy for heat and hot water. This system not only reduces landfill waste but also supports a clean, low-carbon energy future for Charlottetown.
- Greener is Cleaner Program: Guests are invited to help conserve resources by opting out of daily housekeeping services in exchange for a $10 Murphy Hospitality Group gift card. This initiative has proven popular with guests who want to support environmentally responsible travel.
- Reduced Plastic Waste: The hotel has recently transitioned from individual toiletry bottles to bulk dispensers, significantly decreasing single-use plastic waste.

The first Canadian company to offer both land & water tours via solar-electric vehicles, Ride Solar has reclaimed, rebuilt & repowered a 1967 CDN Heritage Vessel from the 1967 Montreal Expo into North America’s LARGEST solar-powered boat & the world’s FIRST solar-powered dinner cruise boat in Charlottetown and built the world’s FIRST solar-powered, 14 passenger pedal bus in Charlottetown to offer food & drink historical eco-tours to those who like to have fun while saving the planet.
